US Sanctioned Ammo Supplier Tied to Mike Johnson’s Russian Campaign Donor

News of political campaign donations often resurfaces, especially when intertwined with foreign interests. Recently, attention has been drawn to Konstantin Nikolaev, a prominent figure linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin, amidst revelations about donations made to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s congressional campaign.

In 2018, funds were contributed to Johnson’s campaign for the Louisiana congressional seat, facilitated through the Texas-based American Ethane company.

While American John Houghtaling co-founded the company, it was predominantly owned by three Russian nationals at the time—Konstantin Nikolaev, Mikhail Yuriev, and Andrey Kunatbaev.

Nikolaev, notably, is identified as a close associate of President Putin.

Johnson’s campaign spokesperson clarified in 2018 that upon becoming aware of the situation, the campaign promptly returned the funds received from American Ethane.

There was no indication of deliberate infringement of federal law, which prohibits campaigns from knowingly accepting donations from foreign-owned corporations, foreign nationals, or entities controlled by foreign nationals.

The resurgence of this information coincides with Johnson’s recent opposition to a foreign aid bill allocating $60 billion to Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia.

Johnson adamantly stated that the Republican-led House would not be pressured into passing the bill, sparking public scrutiny.

Social media platforms have been abuzz with discussions linking Johnson’s campaign contributions to his stance on the foreign aid bill.

Some users have expressed astonishment at the connection between Johnson and individuals with ties to Russia, questioning the integrity of political funding.

Konstantin Nikolaev, aged 52, is a billionaire with a background in transportation, having previously served as the minister of transport for the Russian Federation.

Currently, he and his associates own a significant portion of Globaltrans, Russia’s largest private rail transport operator.

Additionally, Nikolaev has vested interests in sanctioned Tula Cartridge Works, a supplier of ammunition to Russian forces involved in the Ukraine conflict.

Forbes estimated Nikolaev’s net worth at $1.2 billion in 2019, underscoring his significant financial influence.

Moreover, he gained notoriety for his support of Maria Butina, a Russian citizen convicted of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, involved in influencing conservative political groups in the United States.

Concerns regarding the propriety of political contributions linked to Nikolaev surfaced again when Johnson assumed the role of House Speaker.

Critics highlighted the implications of such financial backing, particularly in light of Nikolaev’s association with Butina and his involvement in American Ethane’s donations to Johnson’s campaign.

As inquiries into the matter continue, Johnson’s office has been approached for comment, seeking clarification on the nature of the campaign contributions and their potential impact on political decision-making.
