Julia Navalnaya’s Address in EU Parliament: Condemning Putin as Leader of Criminal Network

Julia Navalnaya, the widow of the late Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, delivered a speech in the European Parliament on February 27th.

She referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as the “leader of a criminal group” and called for continued pressure on his regime. The broadcast was conducted by the channel Current Time.

Julia Navalnaya asserted that Putin must be held accountable “for what he did to Alexei Navalny and to our beautiful neighboring country,” referring to Ukraine. Her speech in the European Parliament was met with vigorous applause.

She urged European politicians not to engage in negotiations with the Kremlin on issues related to Ukraine or any other matter but to instead initiate investigations into Putin’s activities and financial flows, both his own and those of his closest associates.

Two years ago, Putin launched a full-scale war against Ukraine, a brutal and insidious war. The world rushed to aid Ukraine.

Two years later, despite sanctions and financial efforts to stop it, the war persists. Voices advocating for reaching an agreement with Putin are emerging. And here, Putin kills my husband – Alexei Navalny.

It was on Putin’s orders that Alexei was tortured for three years. He was held in isolation, cut off from all contacts, calls, and even letters.

And then they killed him, continuing to mock his body and his mother even after his death. On one hand, we see that Putin is capable of anything, and there is nothing to negotiate with him about.

In the European Parliament, debates on a resolution concerning Navalny’s death commenced on Wednesday.

The text of the resolution labels the politician’s death as murder, calls on the Russian authorities not to interfere with the organization of his funeral, and urges the European Union to hold accountable those responsible for the legal proceedings against Navalny, his imprisonment, and his death.

The draft resolution calls on the EU to bolster support for Russian civil society, refrain from imposing unjustified measures against those seeking asylum from Putin’s regime, and enhance support for Ukraine, including military assistance.
