Colorado’s Supreme Court has ruled that Donald Trump cannot run for president next year in the state, citing a constitutional insurrection clause.

By 4 votes to 3 the court ruled that Mr Trump was not an eligible candidate because he had engaged in an insurrection over the US Capitol riot nearly three years ago.

On March 5th, when Republican voters will choose their preferred candidate for president, Donald Trump’s name will not be on the ballot paper.

This represents the first ever use of Section 3 of the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment to disqualify a presidential candidate.

Trump can still run for US President in next year’s election, but the ruling could make things more difficult for him.

The decision has been placed on hold pending appeal until next month. Similar attempts to remove Trump the the ballot have been made in New Hampshire, Minnesota and Michigan, but have been unsuccessful.

His campaign team intends to appeal to the US Supreme Court.
