In a diplomatic move reflective of Moldova’s stance on territorial integrity, the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared a Russian diplomat persona non grata for their involvement in orchestrating “presidential elections” within the Transnistria region, despite objections from Chisinau.

The decision, announced on March 19th, underscores Moldova’s firm stance against Russian interference in its internal affairs, particularly concerning the Transnistrian region, which remains a point of contention between Moldova and Russia.

According to statements from Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi, the Russian embassy official was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday to be informed of the decision.

Popșoi conveyed Moldova’s protest against Russia’s conduct of presidential elections in Transnistria, a move contradictory to Moldova’s official position.

The diplomat was subsequently declared persona non grata, marking a clear signal of Moldova’s disapproval of Russian actions.

The Moldovan government’s decision is a response to Russia’s decision to open six polling stations on the left bank of the Dniester River, allowing residents of Transnistria to participate in the Russian presidential elections.

This move by Russia was met with opposition from Chisinau, which had prohibited the opening of polling stations in Moldovan territory, except for one located at the Russian embassy in Chisinau.

The expulsion of the Russian diplomat reflects Moldova’s commitment to upholding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It sends a clear message that Moldova will not tolerate external interference, particularly from Russia, in matters pertaining to its internal affairs.

In an interview with “Ukrainska Pravda,” Minister Popșoi reiterated Moldova’s determination to respond to the organisation of “elections” in the unrecognised Transnistrian region by Russia.

This resolve underscores Moldova’s efforts to assert its authority over the entire territory of the country, including Transnistria, and its rejection of any attempts to undermine its sovereignty.
