The vessel “Atlantic Navigator II” carrying uranium from Russia has been forced to enter a German port, where it has been detained.

The ship has been moored in the seaport of Rostock for three weeks now, with enriched uranium on board. This information was reported by the Norddeutsche Neueste Nachrichten.

The enriched uranium was intended for nuclear power plants in the United States.

The ship has been prohibited from leaving the port due to violations of EU sanctions.

Originally departing from St. Petersburg, the vessel was not supposed to call at a German port. However, it experienced engine failure and was forced to undergo repairs in Rostock.

Customs officials discovered goods subject to EU sanctions on board and prohibited the ship from continuing its journey.

In addition to the enriched uranium, the Atlantic Navigator II was also transporting birch timber.

During the investigation, customs authorities found that the timber originates from factories owned by a Russian oligarch included in the EU sanctions list.

The shipping company that owns the Russian vessel has filed a protest against the decision to detain it, but the protest was dismissed.
