CO2 emissions for new cars and vans

EP Plenary session — The Commission communication on ensuring availability and affordability of fertilisers

On 14 July 2021, as part of the ‘Fit for 55’ package, the Commission presented a legislative proposal for a revision of the CO2 emission performance standards for new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The proposal aims to contribute to the EU 2030 and 2050 climate objectives, deliver benefits to citizens and stimulate innovation in zero-emission technologies.

Parliament already adopted the deal reached in interinstitutional negotiations on 14 February 2023.

On 28 March 2023, the Council adopted the regulation setting CO2 emission performance standards for new cars and vans.

‘”I am glad that the deal on CO2 standards for cars and vans has finally been endorsed by the Council of the EU. The text of the agreement that I negotiated on behalf of the European Parliament remains unchanged and sets a clear target for 100% zero-emission new cars and vans after 2035. Any possible future proposals concerning the use of e-fuels will be thoroughly assessed, both on their content and their legal basis,” stated rapporteur Jan Huitema.
